BACKGROUND
On April 15, 1984, Nathan Lane (as Harry Berlin), Judy Kaye, and Steve Vinovich appeared in Love, the musical version of Murray Schisgal's "Luv", written by Jeff Sweet, Howard Marren and Susan Birkenhead. The show, directed by Larry Fuller, had only a brief run at the now-defunct Audrey Wood Theatre. However, a few days after Love closed, it won the Outer Critics Circle Award for best book and best score. Go figure.
The show moved on, without Nathan, under the new title What About Luv?. It was produced in a few regional theatres and ran successfully in a small theatre in London. In recent years it has been a surprisingly large hit in Tokyo. Some years back, Judy decided to do the show again. It reappeared at the York Theatre with David Green and Austin Pendleton under the direction of Patricia Birch. There also has been/will be a revival in Germany.
A cast album was recorded in London with Judy Kaye, David Green, and someone other than Nathan as Harry Berlin. The CD is available at Amazon.
You may recognize the title from the movie 1967 Luv starring Jack Limon, Peter Falk, and Elaine May (look for a young Harrison Ford). In spite of a great jazz score and splendid performance by May, it was a bomb. (You can buy it on video for $12.99 from Amazon.)
Many thanks to Jeff Sweet for this information concerning an obscure, but interesting, part of Nathan's past stage career. Jeff has continued to work with Patricia Birch on several workshops and productions of two more shows, American Enterprise and a musical Jeff wrote with Melissa Manchester called I Sent a Letter to My Love. His new play Bluff, starring Jon Cryer and Sarah Trigger, will debut at Chicago's Victory Gardens Theater: previews begin September 17 and the play runs through October 24.
Thanks also to Guy for the photos and other input!
