Mr. Hardcastle, an old-fashioned country squire, informs his daughter, Kate, that Young Marlow, the son of Hardcastle's old friend Sir Charles Marlow and the man Hardcastle hopes will marry Kate, is to visit from town. However, Young Marlow and his close friend, George Hastings, are tricked into thinking that Mr. Hardcastle's house is an inn by Tony Lumpkin, the mischievous son of Mrs. Hardcastle by a previous marriage. The stage is set for unexpected encounters and memorable confrontations as Kate "stoops to conquer" the bashful but handsome Young Marlow.
